    let's talk

    the sustainable generation.

Our economy depends on a healthy planet. Planetary boundaries define the environmentally safe zones within which humanity and our economy can thrive. There are nine planetary boundaries that must be maintained for the Earth’s climate and ecology to remain stable: climate change, ocean acidification, ozone layer, forest degradation, agrochemical pollution, freshwater overuse, air pollution, toxic waste and biodiversity loss. Out of these nine, we have already breached six, and our current economy is putting growing pressure on those that remain. This economy is based on a flawed system – one that is Wasteful, Idle, Lopsided and Dirty (WILD), and is pushing our planet towards an environmental tipping point.

However, we believe there will be major systems transformations that will be key to achieving a CLIC® economic model in Energy, Land and Oceans, Materials and the pricing of externalities such as Carbon. A transformation is well underway as investor demands, changing consumer behaviour and new regulations, become powerful drivers in the shift to a Circular, Lean, Inclusive and Clean (CLIC®) economy.

land and oceans: new food systems.

Today's growing population has led to an increase in food production, but at an enormous cost to our planet's health. Agriculture uses around 50% of all habitable land and we must now return close to 1 billion hectares of land back to nature by 2030 to achieve our environmental objectives. From precision agriculture to alternative proteins, the world is on the brink of a food systems revolution that will drastically alter the way we produce, distribute and consume food. Discover how these regenerative farming practices can help preserve nature with Michael Urban, our Chief Sustainability Strategist, at FarmED.

    energy: electrifying our economy.

By 2050, the key target date for net zero, electricity will need to supply 70% of our future energy use, from 20% today. Electricity production from renewable or other zero-carbon sources will be ramped up to meet the energy needs of entire industries, while fossil fuel power plants will be phased out. Discover the effects of this transition on your everyday life with our Head of Sustainability Research, Thomas Hohne-Sparborth.
