Bringing together rethinkers to drive the sustainability revolution - Rethink Responsible Capital

On 12 March, the Lombard Odier Rethink Responsible Capital symposium brought together political, business and investment leaders to discuss how our world is changing in the face of significant social and environmental challenges, and how investors can gear their portfolios for this new paradigm.

As we heard from Al Gore and Christiana Figueres, the sustainability revolution is well underway and likely to accelerate, which will have a transformative effect on our economies. We heard from business leaders about the need for investors to take a long-term view as a key factor in allowing companies to navigate the transition, a perspective echoed by the panel of asset owners and managers.

We also heard about the importance of large companies using their influence to improve suitability through the whole supply chain and calls by some for investors to ask more penetrating questions of investee companies around sustainability issues. The investors, meanwhile, were in agreement that sustainability is a central part of fiduciary duty, not least because of the risks and opportunities the revolution will present to portfolios.
