The security of our clients is a priority for Lombard Odier. Using digital communication channels such as email or My LO to communicate with us is convenient and offers great flexibility. Nevertheless, these channels also pose risks linked to the use of the Internet, including:
- Phishing attacks: where cyber criminals try to steal personal information from you, especially user names and passwords, to perpetrate fraud. Attacks can take several forms, including fake emails, phone calls or malicious websites.
- Malware: malicious software that could be installed on your device, allowing cyber criminals to take control of your computer or phone, steal your identity and initiate fraudulent transactions.
Lombard Odier has no direct influence over the security of your computer, tablet and/or personal smartphone and therefore no means of verifying whether your security measures are sufficiently robust. The security guidelines we provide in this article will help you protect yourself with the aim of reducing cyber risks as much as possible.
Protect your passwords and My LO PIN
Generally, use strong passwords to reduce the risk of malicious access to your computer, email, social network accounts and bank accounts.
- Choose a strong password with a minimum length of eight characters. Do not use words or numbers that are personal to you, such as names or surnames.
- Do not reuse the same password for different sites/accounts. Choose a new, strong password for every site or application you use.
- Regularly change passwords and avoid reuse of old ones.
- Keep passwords secret, do not share them with anyone and do not write them down.
On My LO:
- Do not choose a PIN that would be easy to guess (e.g. using personal data, such as your birthday, telephone number, etc.).
- Do not share or write down your PIN (remember: nobody working for Lombard Odier will ever ask for your PIN).
- Change your PIN regularly.
- If you use one, keep your smartcard separate from your PIN. If lost or stolen, please contact us immediately to request that is blocked.
Regularly update your systems and install anti-malware
Regularly update your systems to reduce the risk of cyber criminals exploiting a known security vulnerability to access your data or take control of your phone or computer. Ensure that the operating system, the applications used and the Internet browser are regularly updated with the most recent version. Consider enabling automatic updates.
Install anti-malware software. Ensure the anti-virus software is updated and that regular scans are run. Activate your computer firewall, if available.
Browse the Internet safely
- Protect your privacy firmly. You should be careful of what you say and the data you make available on the Internet. As soon as the data is published online, you lose control of it: it might be copied or re-used without your consent.
- When purchasing online, enter your credit card number only on secure pages (addresses starting with "https://") and on websites you know.
- When you have finished browsing the Internet, close all sessions and disconnect.
- Remember to log out of My LO by clicking on the icon provided for this purpose. For security reasons, you will automatically be logged out of My LO after a short period of inactivity.
- Turn off your computer when not in use.
Protect yourself from scam mails
If you receive an email or text message that seems odd, do not reply, even if you think you know the sender. Do not open any links or attachments that might infect your phone or computer. If you receive a suspicious email from Lombard Odier, call your Relationship Manager to make sure it is genuine. Our email addresses always end with @lombardodier.com, but be aware that email addresses can be faked.
Remember that Lombard Odier will never ask you for personal or confidential information (e.g. My LO PIN number, or personal data) by email.
Protect yourself from scam calls
Fraudsters can call you and pretend to be from Lombard Odier, the police, or other well-known companies. Scam calls can sound real and professional. Remember: if you are not sure about a call, hang up the phone.
- If someone calls and asks you to execute any actions on your computer, hang up. You are probably victim of a social engineering attack. Do not let anyone use your computer, unless you called for help. Do not let anyone take remote control of your computer.
Remember that Lombard Odier will never ask you for personal confidential information (e.g. My LO PIN number, or personal data) by phone. If you are not sure about a call please get in touch with us.
Do not connect any ‘untrusted’ devices
- Do not plug in any USB key you found or unexpectedly received in the post, as it might infect your computer with malware.
- Do not connect your mobile phone to a public charging device. Always use your own cable and charger.
