what are private assets?

The term private assets encompasses a wide range of non-publicly listed investments, including private equity, private debt, real estate, and infrastructure.

While private equity makes up roughly two-thirds of all private assets, the diverse dynamics of private debt, infrastructure, and real estate offer distinct investment opportunities.

Private equity involves investing in privately held companies at various stages of development. Funds may be used to support start-ups, provide working capital to growing companies, acquire mature businesses, or strengthen a company’s balance sheet.

Private debt refers to loans that are not issued by banks or through public bond markets. These loans are typically extended to unlisted companies but can also be used to finance real estate or infrastructure projects.

Investments in real assets range from real estate to infrastructure. Infrastructure currently leads real asset fundraising, as capital shifts from traditional sectors like oil and gas toward sustainable energy and digital infrastructure.
