Facing America, Switzerland keeps its destiny in its own hands. As China and Germany slowed, Switzerland diversified exports toward the US, now its main market outside the EU. But dependence on American consumers has proven a double-edged sword. The new 39% US tariff on Swiss goods, far above the EU and Japan rates, poses real challenges. While gold and pharmaceuticals remain exempt, tariffs still hit around 3.5% of Swiss GDP. Switzerland has few negotiating levers left, but its economy has shown remarkable resilience. With strong fiscal room, long-term investment in energy, infrastructure and defense could prove more effective than negative rates in sustaining growth. Are we about to enter a rare earths super-cycle? Rare earth elements – such as scandium and neodymium – are key ‘transition materials’, needed for the electric turbines, motors and batteries that are underpinning the transition from fossil fuels to renewably generated energy. Though rare earths are not rare, they are hard to extract, and today’s market is dominated by China, which mines 70% of the global supply and processes 90%. With demand set to double to 240,000 tonnes annually by 2030, this is creating a supply threat – recent export restrictions from China prompted price hikes and industry disruption.
