LITTLECUP: The storm before the calm
Apocalyptic! That’s how Norgador skipper Jean-Pierre de Siebenthal described racing conditions on the first day of qualifying races for the 27th edition of the LITTLECUP.
High winds battered competitors on Monday, damaging five of the seven boats with Team Cogito 2015 forced to withdraw from the competition after capsizing and breaking their wing.
For defending champion Franck Cammas, skipper of the Groupama Sailing Team, the name of the game was “survival and the goal to complete the course with nothing broken”.
Meanwhile Benoît Morelle and Benoît Marie, helming Axon Racing, expressed relief and delight that they had won the first race in third place despite breaking a daggerboard and managed to finish second in the second race.
On Tuesday, by contrast, Lake Geneva was becalmed with racing postponed until late afternoon. Groupama once again took the honours and has now won all three races so far.
Swiss team AXON Racing won a tightly fought contest for second place with Norgador, another Swiss boat, finishing third.
Barring surprises, it looks increasingly likely that either AXON Racing or Norgador will be the second finalist competing against Groupama in a series of duels at the end of the week.
